Built on the rock
Greece has a predominantly rugged countryside, with approximately 80% of the landscape covered in mountains and rocky hills. In ancient times the architects and builders used these mountains and huge rock formations to provide a strong foundation for their buildings, as in the photograph above.
Still today it is a sustainable practice to use stone as the foundation material, with some architects noting that this not only gives strength but also allows buildings to blend in with the natural environment.
This reminds us of the Bible story Jesus tells in Matthew 7 v 24-29.
The wise builder listens to Jesus’ teachings and puts them into practice. Their house is built on a solid foundation of rock, which withstands the storms of life that will inevitably come their way.
Whereas the foolish builder constructs their house on the sand, and when the winds of life batter their dwelling, it is easily destroyed because it rests on an unstable foundation.
So let’s build OUR life on the rock of faith in God and in his son Jesus Christ. This will provide us with an immovable spiritual basis on which we can experience life’s challenges and joys. Let’s strengthen our relationship with God through prayer and reading His Word each day so that the house of our life stands firm.
